INTERVIEW WITH EXTRA ANDREW

Who are you?

I ask myself this EXACT question every day. Here's what I've figured out about myself so far:

I'm Extra Andrew. I'm 1/3 of Brooklyn DJ boy band Earth Beat, along with my buds Gee Dee and Latane Fundido. We've been residents at Good Room, my favorite nightclub in the world, for (almost) 6 years now.

What is the inspiration for this mix?

For this mix, I wanted something bright and cheeky, with some fun versions/interpretations of classic tracks. Corridor to me does a great job of interpreting classic clothing in a new fun way, so it felt appropriate to me. Also, my friendship with Dan was built off a shared VIGOROUS passion for fun-having, so also wanted that spirit to come through here.

I'm a huge fan of 80s synth-pop, Italo disco, and proto-house, and realized I'd never really done a recorded solo mix showcasing JUST that part of my collection. So this was the perfect opportunity for me to do that.

Where do you live and how does that inspire your music?

I moved to Miami from Brooklyn almost exactly a year ago. I think the fact that I now live in a city defined by warm weather, art deco buildings, and neon lights will probably be evident in this mix. I hope it wouldn't sound too out of place blasting out of a convertible on Ocean Drive in like, 1989. (Though as a toddler living in the greater Philadelphia area in 1989, I unfortunately cannot confirm this for sure).

I definitely still have a strong NY influence when it comes to my taste in music, but I've found that living in Miami has completely re-energized my passion for going out to dig for records. The shops here always have stuff that I'm genuinely shocked to see in the wild. For the sounds I'm most frequently seeking (synth-pop, late 80s/early 90s house, freestyle, anything with Spanish lyrics, reggae, etc), Miami has been a goldmine. But to any DJs reading - I already bought all the good ones. Don't bother coming!!!! Sorry!!!!

I hope you can sit back and enjoy this mix for a little beam of sunshine, wherever you're tuned in from.
