We recently linked with LA-based musician Carly Bond, also known as Meernaa, before her performance at Baby’s All Right. Walking through Dumbo and Vinegar Hill on a sunny spring morning, photographer Phoenix Johnson captured Carly in a couple of looks from the new collection. We discussed the sound and influences for Meernaa and what life is like at her recording studio. Keep reading in the journal for our interview with Carly and view the photoshoot below.

INTERVIEW WITH MEERNAA
APRIL, 2024

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background in music?

I'm an engineer, producer and musician and I release work under the name Meernaa. I work out of a studio in Los Angeles, CA called Altamira that I built with my husband and two close friends. I started playing music in high school; I was in the jazz band playing guitar and bass clarinet in the orchestra. I didn't start writing songs until I was in my twenties and I'm still learning how to play music. I love it.

How would you describe your sound? What are some of your musical influences?

I'm not totally sure how to describe my sound. Maybe it has some soul to it, perhaps some folk, but I really don't know. I have so many influences it's hard to pin down just a few. But top influences are: Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Marvin Gaye, Nick, Drake, Talk Talk, Nina Simone, Bonnie Raitt, D'Angelo, Bob Dylan, John Martyn, Minnie Ripperton.

You have a recording studio in LA. Can you tell us a bit about the space and community you work with?

We opened the space in 2022 and are so stoked on how it's turned out. We did our best to design it to feel aesthetically timeless. We have an API Legacy console in our A room which makes the space so fun to work in. We try to host shows about once a month to facilitate a kind of elevated house show vibe-- they are small and intimate and sound very good. We record all kinds of music and artists ( good vibes only ). Our main goal is to make high fidelity recording rad and accessible to everyone.

What do you have coming up this year?

I have a bunch of shows in LA coming up this summer including a residency at Healing Force Records and a west coast tour in the fall. Other than that I'll be recording my own stuff and other people!
