The planet Neptune in astrology is associated with the visions and fantasies that inspire and dominate culture at any given time. Music, painting, literature, cinema, photography, all of those art forms are synonymous with Neptune and its influence on our personal and collective imagination. Of those creative expressions, fashion is one of the more elusive and mysterious. Fashion is forever in flux. As soon as a particular look or style has gained prominence, it disappears into the mists of time and is replaced by another enigmatic design, cut, hemline, and color palette.

Neptune takes around fourteen years to transit a sign of the Zodiac. The style and characteristics of that sign directly inform the dreams, longings, and fantasies that appear in culture. Consider history and how some recent Neptune transits set off various trends and styles in fashion:

Neptune through Sagittarius (roughly 1970 to 1984). As Neptune moved through freedom-loving, boundary-hopping, global-minded Sagittarius, the gypsy motif dominated. Peasant blouses and Bohemian looks with embroidery, fringe, suede, and crochet dominated the designer’s imagination. Anything related to constraint was shunned. Bras and girdles disappeared. Comfortability was paramount. The term ‘leisure suit’ entered the vernacular. As ecological awareness became prominent—which included the widening threat to endangered species—fur was seen a verboten.

Neptune through Capricorn (roughly 1984 to 1998). The planet of dreams and ideals moving through the sign of corporate structure, tradition, and authority, translated into a shift back to the classics. Well-tailored clothing, often with big ‘power shoulders’ from houses like Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani dominated. With the economic recession, another form of the ‘classics’—vintage attire like jeans, flannel shirts, and leather jackets— appeared within the ‘grunge’ aesthetic. Those with the funds that could support couture choices, focused on clothing that would remain fashionable for the long run—free from flashy trends.

Neptune through Aquarius (roughly 1998 to 2012). Neptune transiting the sign of technology, androgyny, and diversity showed up in kaleidoscopic ways. Aquarius’s alignment with the ‘everyday person’ promoted the vision that anyone, anywhere, could afford to look fashionable. This attitude was also influenced by the internet’s expansion. Brands like Zara, H&M, and Forever 21 got traction. Luxury and streetwear began to mix, as hip-hop stars popularized bling culture. As a counterpoint, MySpace and the early days of Tumblr influenced DIY and thrifted looks. Sex and gender boundaries began to blur, allowing for styles that were not strictly male or female-oriented.

Neptune through Pisces (roughly 2012 to 2025). Neptune traversing the final sign of the Zodiac brought a free-for-all vibe to fashion. Pisces is a cumulative sign that gathers all that came before it into a mishmash, a sort of stew from which a new 165-year cycle will emerge once Neptune moves into Aries (which it did in March of this year). This was the transit of the influencer, but also the ‘do it yourself’ individual. Life was now internet-dominated, allowing people to manipulate reality with the use of filters and artifice. ‘Fake news’ and knowing what was ‘real’ became a challenge. Fashion mirrored a sort of ‘everything, everywhere, all at once’ vibe. Loungewear and comfort clothing, along with gender-neutral fashion, became popular.

Now that Neptune has moved into Aries (until 2038), what might emerge in fashion? After the mishmash of blurry influences (and influencers) of the Neptune through Pisces transit, people are likely to be drawn to extreme individualism. Rebellion and adrenaline (big Aries themes) will become venerated again. And the Martian associations with the sign will bring military-inspired designs and attitudes into the mix. Bold colors that blend or clash will become a key style feature. And head and face art (the anatomical association with Aries) will find new ways of being adorned. Hats will take on new significance. Disruption (combined with activism) will be celebrated as a way to display one’s individuality. I consider this a refreshing escape from the blurry loss of personal style associated with the Neptune through Pisces transit. Bring it on.

Horoscopes for Summer / Autumn 2025

ARIES (MAR 21-APR 20):  Focus attention on close relationships, and see if the freedom you crave is being squelched by people’s demands or conditions. If you strike a balance between commitment and independence, you’ll create for yourself (and others) a healthy compromise. Carve out time to actually, (really and truly) schedule your intentions. Saturn in your sign now requires maturity and bringing to the fore whatever wisdom you’ve accrued. A lot will be asked of you in the years ahead, and this preparatory phase will help you step up to the plate with excitement and foresight.

TAURUS (APR 21-MAY 21):  Uranus, the planet of Promethean rebellion and “I Did It My Way” vibes, is finishing its long transit through your sign. This forces you to reassess relationships, close and casual, and take chances that would normally unnerve your usual MO. Recruit new comrades into your circle, those who will promote your urge to turn everything upside down. If cornered in business matters, pause to reassess and rearrange terms. Contracts and commitments (even your own ‘get-shit-done’ agenda) are up for review. Host a party for revolutionaries.

GEMINI (MAY 22-JUN 21):  Your imagination is moving into a quiet phase in preparation for Uranus’ ingress into your sign next month. Soon, you’ll want to re-evaluate all the places and causes that you’ve made commitments to. If not working to improve them, you’ll be looking to discard them. The key puzzle you need to pay attention to? Disappointment and dissatisfaction might feel overwhelming. But that’s fine. Presently, it’s about ‘neti neti’, the Hindu teaching of “not this, not that.” By understanding what you don’t want, you discover what’s of worth (and worthy of your devotion).

CANCER (JUN 22-JUL 22):  You’re prepping to escape from suspended animation. It’s time to crack the cocoon and force yourself out of your proverbial shell. Jupiter, the ‘don’t fence me in’ planet, is transiting your Sun now. There’s a necessity to sharpen your focus and forge a detailed, step-by-step approach towards goals and aims. We all struggle with resistance, but you redefined the stalemate during the first half of this year. See if you can use this dream-like state to jump-start an ongoing creative project while keeping your feet firmly on the aforementioned new path.

LEO (JUL 23-AUG 23):  Did you know that the word ‘influence’ is based on ancient astrological principles? Namely, the ways in which the cosmos inspires and energizes our day-to-day lives. For the rest of the year, you need to study what influences you most. You’d be surprised what you’re susceptible to right now. The cosmos is goading you forward while upping your natural supply of courage and daring. If you’re angling for a raise or promotion, give it a shot. If you’re denied, perhaps it’s time to strike out on your own to forge your unique brand.

VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23):  Now that Neptune has moved out of its long opposition to your sign, clarity and direct motion are much easier to achieve. An unlived side of your life is attempting to find ground. Imagine yourself as an advocate and freedom fighter. You shine brightest when helping others. Use your keen ability to discriminate to help save the day on a problem that seems unmanageable. But avoid turning your critical eye on those in your close circle; save that for improving your efforts.

LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23): How can you best channel your irritability and impatience? That’s the puzzle to contemplate now. There’s a good chance you’ll find success with a project or goal that has confounded you throughout the early part of this year, but it will take careful strategizing. You’re an ace when it comes to charming and convincing others; apply that same diplomatic approach to those who hold the power that you covet. Count on strategies that explore unconventional solutions. The universe is forcing you beyond your comfort zone. And changing up key relationships.

SCORPIO (OCT 24th-NOV 22nd): Time to finetune your sensitivity and bring a lighter touch to your undertakings. Yes, the highs and lows throughout the first part of the year were extreme, but you’re ready to apply the wisdom you’ve acquired in a metered, sane way. Use it to establish new agreements and forge stronger commitments. Consider that humor is an effective means to strike a balance and level the playing field (and disarm adversaries when necessary). And if you can laugh at yourself occasionally, that will lighten things up as well.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23rd-DEC 21st): The remainder of this year involves ‘getting your ducks in a row.’ Plan to rework your schedule to devote more time to neglected businesses. Or ditch a few of the pots on your cooktop. Streamline. Because you value freedom, you’re not one to create limitations, but conditions have reached a point where you want to establish and maintain boundaries. A healthy dose of applied discipline will both support and further your liberty. What a fun koan! If any sign can make that work, it’s you.

CAPRICORN (DEC 22nd-JAN 20th): If you’re following the rules and mandates of someone (or something) else, you’ll lose track of your inner guidance. Of all the signs, you function best when a small amount of difficulty is part of the equation. Not that you court trouble, but you rise to the occasion and bring your best game forward when you find ways to surmount adversities. You’re built to go slow (but steady) to win. Pay attention to your nocturnal dreams and the messages your unconscious is sending. Guidance comes from the liminal.

AQUARIUS (JAN 21st-FEB 19th):  There’s tension ping-ponging between your desire for control and the need for cooperation. This generally plays out in your relational world. Although you might feel a sharp division within yourself as well. The theme for the rest of the year: Old mental habits versus new ways of seeing and evaluating the world. What’s at stake is an attitude shift regarding solitude and your desire to assert yourself in a new group. Choose the latter, you’re ready for a refreshed social scene.

PISCES (FEB 20th-MAR 20th):  You’re toggling a fascinating polarity, between clarity and off-the-beaten-path inspiration. Try to understand how those two modes can complement, rather than confuse each other. Get both of your fish swimming in the same pool. Saturn backtracks into your sign in September for one final set of lessons. The key to winning is putting all of your facts in order. The better organized you become, the more power you have to define your direction forward.
