CHESAPEAKE
By James A. Michener
This epic novel details the American history of Maryland, my home state, through the lens of 7 families. From Native Americans to Quakers to the slave trade and contemporary immigrants, it paints a thorough portrayal of a state that has always been at the crossroads of country - both southern and northern - coastal and farmlands. He writes with great ease, and despite the size of the novel, it's a page turner.
DEMON COPPERHEAD
By Barbara Kingsolver
It's a beautiful coming of age story set in rural Virginia. It's tragic, it's uplifting - it's a truly complete novel of the highest order that explores the opioid crisis from the drug companies to the users themselves.
LET THE GREAT WORLD SPIN
By Colum McCann
Another fantastic novel that describes New York accurately - piecing together many characters over generations - it's a must read.
