INTERVIEW WITH DANIEL T
MAY, 2024
Can you introduce yourself and your background?
My name is Simon. I’m a DJ bred and based in New York, and born in Ukraine. Im also the guy you come to for all things dance music at A1 records.
How did your Ukrainian heritage and childhood in Brooklyn shape your music taste?
The short answer is this: When I was a kid, my mother would always be playing classical music, Elton John, Billy Joel, and a lot of Soviet artists like Alla Pugacheova. I was 5 years old when my family and I moved to New York. Kids around my area from the former Soviet Union usually were put into classes like swimming, boxing, ballet, or ballroom dancing. I took on competitive ballroom dancing and had a strong passion for movement on the dance floor from a really young age. With that also came a deep love for music with Latin elements…all different speeds since some of the dances were slow, and some fast. As a teenager, I was listening to a lot of hip hop and R&B. By 13 I started taking house dancing classes since I started getting into more of a 4 to the floor sound, everything from House to Trance and Future Jazz. So to bring this back full circle, being exposed to so many different sounds at that age really made me appreciate all types of music, and it does every time I play. I never stay in one lane for too long before throwing you a curveball.
What is the inspiration behind your Corridor Radio mix?
Just like for any time I play out or record something, I carefully choose my records based on the way I feel at that time and let the rest unfold. There’s really no inspiration other than making sure my records allow me to express different energies.
Where’s your favorite place to Dance on a night off?
Recently I’ve been going to Nightmoves and Milagrosa often. It feels like home there and more intimate. Music is always on point. If Theo Parrish is playing I’ll always clear my schedule and head to Nowadays. There are also a couple of really special DIY parties that I love called Jewel and Xoloft.
Where can we find you DJing this summer?
In July I’ll be at Jupiter Disco on the 13th of July with Cosmo, 20th at Milagrosa with the boss himself Felipe from BK, and at The Last Call on the 27th. In August I’ll be back at Jupiter Disco on the 4th, a DIY party with my brother Very J on the 9th, and at The Lot Radio on the 11th. Hope to see you there!
